Design Brief

A successful collaboration between landscape designer Bryan McDonald, architectural designer Fraser Gillies, and the owners has provided this Mission/Arts & Crafts family home with the perfect setting. Extensive landscape development was required in response to the challenge of combining the contemporaryneeds of vehicle access, garaging, outdoor living, and thematic garden planting, on a relatively small rear sloping site that reflectedthe aesthetic of the 2004 house alterations.A deliberately semi-formal structure, combining stone and plastered walls, pergolas, tiled courtyards, and outdoor spaces, surrounds the whole dwelling. This structural approach is also reflected in the palms, espaliered trees, and under-planting, which blend with the overall architecture and borrowed scenery from the large modernist palm-scape development edging the northern boundary.
