Val is dedicated to creating dynamic, contemporary, distinctive and functional outdoor spaces for people to live, work and enjoy.

Having worked within the garden industry since 2007 she has a wealth of knowledge. Her gardens have been selected and opened to the public in 2019, 2022 and 2024 for the Auckland DesignFest event, she had a display at the Gardens on Plinths, Auckland Flower Show 2018 and has a great following and constant presence on Social Media. As well as providing her own clients with commissions, Val has been contracted by Palmers Remuera as their Principal Landscape Designer since 2014.

“Strong relationship and good rapport is essential to my designs. My ethos is to provide clients with commitment, vigour, passion and a design unique to them. I listen to their requirements, what they say and what they leave unsaid, what they want from a garden, how much maintenance they are prepared to do, specific likes and dislikes and their lifestyle.”

“Designs need to relate to the immediate surroundings, the environment, the location and be sustainable. It has to be original, inspirational and timeless, with a sense of fun and a touch quirky. Most of all it has to be reflective of my client and their personality. Gardens have many roles, it guides the visitor onto the property, it announces the relationship it has with you, it reflects who you are, it can frame or soften a house, it screens unwanted views, it is fluid, it changes with each season, the colours and textures, movement, shade and shadows create life and atmosphere.”

Val believes a well designed space incorporates hardscaping and plants as elements within the design to create visual interest. The scene must have the ability to change through the seasons and mature over the years. Environmental conditions have to be taken into consideration, ensuring the level of care the plant needs is met, “Right plant in the right place”.

We use all our senses in a landscape, not just with your eyes, for me one of the first impressions I gain is feeling, how do I feel within the environment?
